In the wild it is found in Italy and the Caucasus. A tree up to 15 m tall, with an ovoid crown distinguished by glossy, dark green leaves. It leafs out very early and retains its leaves until November. Undemanding of soil, it can grow in wind-exposed sites. It grows very well on calcareous soil and is a very wind-resistant plant.
