Europe, Western Asia. Native species, 10–15 (–20) m in height and 5–10 (–15) m in width, with corky ridges and a very dense, slightly irregular crown. Furthermore, a very valuable plant with attractive foliage, tolerant of pollution, shade-tolerant and fast-growing for hedging, known for its frost hardiness and its ability to tolerate pruning. A Dutch cultivar of field maple free from powdery mildew with a uniform habit; Amstelveen, 1953. Habit: height 8–12 m, a small to medium-sized tree which under favourable conditions easily propagates from cuttings; crown closed, in a young tree the height is the same as the width, with growth probably broadly ovoid; upper part of the bark unusually reddish, lower part reddish or green.
