Throughout the area influenced by the Atlantic climate, heather is a characteristic plant on poor, lime-deficient, low-fertility soil together with birches, pines, and junipers. Its presence indicates podzolic soil. It is tolerant of drought and heat. Heather – an ornament for any heath garden, indispensable for planting in front of rhododendrons and evergreen plants, and as a substitute for a lawn. After flowering, moderate pruning is recommended. All heathers are tolerant of industrial air pollution.
