Labyrinths in parks are usually formed from tall clipped living hedges (using hornbeam, linden, laurel). Until the 18th century they had a symbolic religious meaning (the difficulties on a pilgrim's path); later they acquired educational or recreational meanings (for example, the labyrinths of the Summer Garden with sculptures on themes from Aesop's fables, arranged under Peter I).
