From Latin hibrida , hybrida - a mixture, an organism (cell) obtained as a result of the combining of genetic material of genotypically different organisms (cells), i.e., hybridization. In natural populations of cross-pollinating plants practically every individual is heterozygous for many genes, i.e., is a hybrid, which is necessary to maintain a certain level of genotypic variability in the population.

Distant hybrids (of different taxa — species, genera, families) are encountered in nature rather rarely and, as a rule, are sterile. This indicates that natural selection prevents both their formation and their survival. Nevertheless, the origin of some plant species has been associated with the formation of distant hybrids.
