Woody or shrub plants planted close to one another that, according to the designer's intent, play a specific compositional role in forming the landscape of a garden or park; they are usually arranged along the edges of woodlands, on lawns and glades, and at path turns. Groups are subdivided by species composition (single-species or mixed), by size (small — 3–5 trees; large — 11 or more trees, but with an area usually not exceeding the height of the trees), and by compactness and openness (compact, bouquet plantings, open/permeable, loose plantings, etc.). One of the best examples of group design is the White Birch district in Pavlovsk.
