Thickets of low-growing thorny xerophytic shrubs and small trees (wild rose, hawthorn, downy oak and others); unlike maquis, predominantly deciduous. Occurs in the Eastern Mediterranean (the Balkans, Eastern Crimea and the Caucasus) on sites of cleared forests in the foothills and lower mountain zones.
