An extensive (usually more than 10–15 ha) landscaped green area, improved and artistically arranged for outdoor recreation. The term entered the Russian language in the 18th century from England and originally meant a natural grove or a piece of forest with picturesque alleys, glades, ponds of irregular outline, gazebos, sculpture, etc. At present parks are regarded as the most important element of the citywide system of greenery and recreation; they perform health-improving, cultural and educational, aesthetic, and nature-conservation functions. Parks are classified by purpose into parks of culture and recreation, children’s parks, sports parks, promenade parks, memorial parks, and park-museums; by location and use by the population — citywide, district, suburban; by terrain character — floodplain, ravine, upland, etc.
